37 Jefferson Avenue
Built in the 1950s, this apartment building has provided safe and welcoming homes to women in the Amethyst rehabilitation program for more than 20 years. Although it does not contribute architecturally to the historic district, the need for supportive housing in Franklin County is so acute we have been unable to contemplate tearing it down.
Amethyst programs on Jefferson Avenue have provided long-term, gender-specific alcohol and drug treatment combined with supportive housing for homeless women and their families. The distinctive treatment model focuses on addiction while emphasizing the roles that poverty and trauma play in perpetuating drug and alcohol use in women. Amethyst's services have helped some of the most vulnerable women and children in the community.
